Alpha Kappa Delta Minority Fellowship

One recipient, $20,000

The Details: This fellowship is for Black/African American, Latino/a/x, American Indian or Alaskan Native, or Asian or Pacific Islander students enrolled in a Ph.D. in Sociology program. The award includes designated cohort programming at the ASA Annual Meeting, travel support for scientific conferences, and an opportunity to become a part of a distinguished network of sociologists.

The LAGRANT Foundation 2023 Scholarship Program 

Multiple recipients, $2,000

The Details: This scholarship is for Black/African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American/American Indian full-time students at a four-year college or university, with a major in a field that has an emphasis on advertising, marketing, or public relations. In addition to the $2,000 award, winners will receive a trip to either New York City, New York, Portland, OR, and Minneapolis, MN, where they will participate in career-building activities.

Undergraduate Student Paper Competition

Multiple recipients, Varies

The Details: This scholarship is by Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society. Students must be current members of Alpha Kappa Delta, and the paper must have been written when the author was an undergraduate. All winners will receive up to $1,000 in travel expenses to the 2023 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association. The first place receives $500, the second place receives $250, and the third place receives $100.

The Undergraduate Social Action Award

Multiple recipients, Varies

The Details: This award is given by the SWS, Sociologists for Women in Society, to recognize a student or team of students making a substantial contribution to improving the lives of women in society through activism. The award includes round-trip travel expenses to attend the SWS Winter meeting. The registration will also be waived. Students must be nominated by an SWS member, although students don’t have to be a member themselves. Work must have been done as an undergraduate.

The Esther Ngan-ling Chow and Mary Joyce Green Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $18,000

The Details: This scholarship is from SWS, Sociologists for Women in Society, to offer support to women and non-binary scholars of color who are from underrepresented groups and are studying concerns that women of color face domestically and/or internationally and to increase the network and participation of students and professionals of color in SWS and beyond. Students must be a woman or non-binary, and from a racial/ethnic group facing racial discrimination in the US.

Raftelis Leadership Scholarships

Multiple recipients, $5,000

The Details: This scholarship has the goal of supporting and growing relationships with promising students who have an interest in becoming problem solvers for local governments and municipal water utilities. The ideal candidate has an interest in a consulting career. In addition to the $5,000 towards college education, winners will be matched with a mentor and have the potential for an internship. Students must be college juniors, college seniors, or graduate students.

Humanities Scholarships

Humanities is the study of human society and culture. Humanities include different subjects such as languages, history, philosophy, language arts, performing arts, and visual arts. If you are going into the Humanities, here are a few scholarships that can be worth applying for. 

Norma Ross Walter Scholarship 

Multiple recipients, $2,000-$3,000

The Details: This scholarship is for female graduates of Nebraska high schools who intend to major in English in college. It was established through a generous bequest from Norma Ross Walter, who was a firm believer in education for young women. First place will receive $3,000, second place, $2,500, and third place, $2,000. Selection is based on intellectual promise, creativity, and character of the applicant.

Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships 

Multiple recipients, $25,800

The Details: This scholarship is for poets between the ages of 21-31. Applicants will need to submit 10 pages of poetry and a one-page writer’s statement.

The Details: This scholarship is for graduating high school students who will be pursuing an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History and American Government.

Multiple recipients, $2,000

The Details: This scholarship is to provide awards for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise. It is to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Winners will receive $5,000 before graduate school begins and $30,000 while attending graduate school. Students must be a college junior with a plan to enter a research-focused master’s or doctoral program or MFA in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

Human Resources Scholarships

One recipient, $1,000

The Details: This scholarship is to provide assistance to a student who has declared a major or an emphasis in the human resources field. They also need to be a high school senior or entering their 2nd year or higher of college at an accredited post-secondary institution. The school does not have to be in WI.

The Details: This scholarship was established to further the aims of the New England Employee Benefits Council to advance the knowledge and education of individuals in the employee benefits field or those aspiring to careers in employee benefits and total rewards. Students must be full-time or part-time students either undergraduates or graduates, residing in New England or enrolled in a college in New England.

The Details: This scholarship is for rising college freshmen through postgraduate studies at a US or four-year degree-granting institution. It is for students majoring in business, food management, IT, or other focuses leading to a career in grocery.

The Details: This scholarship helps women pursue undergraduate and master’s degrees in business management and overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. They have been awarding these scholarships since 1998. Jane M. Klausman was a member of the Zonta Club of Syracuse, NY, and the 1990-1995 Zonta International Parliamentarian. Introduction

Over the past decade, we’ve seen a proliferation of scholarships for veterans, military scholarships, and even education grants targeted at the military spouse community.

There are currently about 19 million U.S. veterans, as reported by the Pew Research Center earlier this year. That’s less than 10% of America’s adult population.

Even so, only an estimated 40% of those veterans are using their GI Bill benefits. More than 2.9 million veterans have entered into higher education, some have used their GI Bill benefits, and others have not.

Why?

Because institutions of higher learning and companies across America are realizing the value that comes from the military community. The discipline, loyalty, and courage inherent in your service make you some of the best students and employees these organizations have ever seen.

Defining the Terms

What is meant by “Scholarships for Veterans” and “Military Scholarships”?

Generally speaking, a Veteran is someone who has served any portion of their life in one of the military branches. Some serve for a few years, others serve for decades. All have made sacrifices for the country.

When someone is “Military”, that usually means that they’re currently serving in the active, reserve, or guard component of a branch of service. They are on the frontline of Freedom.

Scholarships for Veterans are those sources of education funding that target the veteran community. These scholarships come from federal government agencies, state organizations, companies, and nonprofits across the country.

Military scholarships are those that target a current military member. Like scholarships for veterans, these opportunities come from a myriad of different sources.

Oftentimes, though, the term “military scholarship” applies to active duty, reserve, National Guard, veterans, and military spouses. Not always, but often enough to caveat that here. Be sure to read the eligibility requirements.

Regardless of where you stand in the military community, either veteran, military spouse, or currently serving, scholarships and grants serve to help you achieve your goals.

Why Apply for Military Scholarships?

It’s a Numbers Game

I mentioned above that the veteran population makes up less than 10% of the total U.S. adult population. Additionally, less than 1% of our citizens are currently serving.

What this means for you, the seeker of military scholarships, is that there is less competition than for those scholarships that are open to everyone.

Now don’t read that wrong, there is still competition. But, it is limited to those currently serving, or to those who have served before.

Unused Funding

Every year, scholarship opportunities go unused. This is a travesty considering that student debt continues accumulating every year. 

The reason these scholarships for veterans and military go unused is for lack of applicants. If you’re applying for scholarships to fund your education goals, then apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible.

You Deserve It

Do not feel guilty for trying to get as much funding as possible. There is money out there that companies, agencies, and state governments have set aside to support the military community.

If you meet the requirements, then you have every right to apply for that funding source. You chose to raise your right hand and defend the US of A. Now, others have chosen to show their support and appreciation by offering military scholarships and scholarships for veterans.

General Requirements for Military Scholarships

While each organization that offers money for military scholarships can set their requirements for awardees, some general guidelines apply.

First, you should somehow be affiliated with the military, usually a veteran or currently serving. While most are open to all branches of service, some target a more specific demographic.

For example, the National Ranger Memorial Foundation offers the Ranger Memorial Scholarship to U.S. Army Rangers of any age and their dependents.

In any case, be prepared to offer proof of service, either through a DD-214, using ID.me, or submitting a letter from your company commander.

For many scholarship applications, you will be required to write an essay or some other form of writing. Sometimes they just want to hear your story, and at other times they want to see if you will follow instructions. 

Pay close attention to due dates, writing requirements, and any other information listed on the application.

Tips for Applying to Military Scholarships

Here are some helpful reminders when applying to military scholarships:

• First, apply for as many scholarships as you can.
• Keep a calendar of pending due dates. Don’t let those slip by!
• Do NOT procrastinate on the essay. Take the time to write the best one you can.
• Stick to the word count, even if that means cutting and revising.
• Have someone else read your application and essay.
• Be prepared for rejection. You’re awesome, but so are your military brothers and sisters.

Types of Scholarships for Veterans

Financial Aid for Active Service

The most common form of financial aid for active service members is Tuition Assistance (TA). Each service offers TA to their active service members, and it can be used to cover the costs associated with a college degree.

Getting a degree while on active duty is easier than you think. Read Active Duty and College: College While in the Military to discover how it works.

It is also worth noting that military college students can submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). While many students understand that student loans are a by-product of applying for FAFSA, there are also grants you can receive.

Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who display a financial need and have not already earned a degree.

And get this, even if you’re using the GI Bill, or receiving Tuition Assistance, you can still apply for FAFSA!  

Don’t worry about the loans, though. You can decline them once your aid eligibility is reported to your school.

College Grants for Veterans

Grants are monetary awards given for a specific purpose that do not need repayment. They are the antithesis to loans and are abundant for education.

We’ve already mentioned the Pell Grant, which can only be received by filling out the FAFSA Application. While not specific to veterans, it is the most widely received grant in today’s education system.

The Pell Grant does not need to be repaid, and the amount you receive depends on your financial need, the costs of school, and whether or not you’re a full- or part-time student.

The GI Bill, either MGIB or Post-9/11, tap dances on the line between earned benefit and education grant. It certainly is a benefit that all veterans deserve, and in most cases it does not need repayment.

However, unlike grants and scholarships, The GI Bill is almost guaranteed for all veteran degree seekers. (There are minimum discharge requirements that must be met.)

Grants and Scholarships for Active-Duty Service Members

For those active service members, there are unique scholarship and grant opportunities for you!

Each service has a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) that awards military scholarships to active, Guard, and reserve service members. There are over 1100 institutions of higher learning that participate in one or more ROTC programs, and most offer 2-, 3-, and 4-year options.

The Navy ROTC program covers both the Navy and Marine Corps.

Likewise, the Space Force will likely fall under the Air Force ROTC program for their education and commissioning needs. More to follow on that topic.

Another education program available to active Army Soldiers is the Green to Gold program. This is a two-year program that provides Soldiers the opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree or a two-year graduate degree. This program leads to a commission as an Army officer.

Similar to the Army’s program, the Air Force hosts The Enlisted-To-Officer Path. This program gives Airmen the opportunity to earn their degrees and a commission in the Air Force.

Finally, Tuition Assistance (TA) is a program that provides education funding to military service members while they are still serving. Tuition Assistance can cover up to 100% of the cost-per-credit hour of many institutions.

The Details: This scholarship is to benefit the underrepresented and economically disadvantaged. Students who are studying photography, illustration, and design disciples in colleges and universities in the US are eligible. They also have honorable mention prizes of $500 cash. Winners will also receive a one-year AIGA membership. Students must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree program in the disciplines of graphic design, illustration, or photography.

The Details: This grant is funded by Vera Bradley and awards $5,000 to two women of color who are making a difference in their communities. Walt Disney Imaginations Design Competition Project Challenge

Students will receive up to $25,000 for 25-52 week programs, up to $12,500 for 12-24 week programs, with up to $12,000 for domestic language study.

Jeff Zimpleman Scholarship

The Details: This is for students enrolled in a college or university that have been current residents of the state of Iowa for at least the last five years. The funds are for costs related to travel, flights, and in some cases housing. Students can apply if they are seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate in the areas of international business, international agriculture or related studies, international relations/culture including language, art, and music, that takes them to one of Iowa’s sister states. Students can also be traveling abroad for short courses, internships, conferences, or symposiums or working on research projects or documentaries in those same areas. Iowa’s sister states are Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan Yucatan, Mexico Hebei Province, PRC Terengganu, Malaysia Stavropol Krai, Russia Taiwan Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine Veneto Region, Italy The Republic of Kosovo.

NCITD Scholarship Program

The Details: This scholarship from NCITD, the National Council on International Trade Development, is to help promote education and careers in international trade. Winners will receive a minimum of $1,000 and a one-year NCITD membership. They will also be welcomed to monthly meetings. Students must be currently enrolled in either an undergraduate or graduate degree related to international trade studies, including international relations. Undergraduates must be at least a junior.

Paul S. Honda Scholarship

The Details: This scholarship is through PAAC, the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council. The late Paul S. Honda established an endowment for the scholarship fund to promote Asian studies and international studies in higher education. They will be giving out four, $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who want to pursue these fields at a post-secondary level and have been actively involved in PAAC.

WIIT Scholarships

The Details: This is a merit-based scholarship from WIIT, the Association of Women in International Trade, to support and encourage women to study all aspects of international trade. Students must identify as female and be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university or college, either full-time or part-time. They also must be a junior or senior or be enrolled in graduate studies. In addition to the $1,500 award, students will also receive a full year of personal mentorship by a WIIT member and one full year of WIIT membership.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Details: This scholarship is to enable students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. It is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university and allows them to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

Multiple recipients, $5,000

The Details: This program is a summer study abroad program for American college and university students to learn languages. It is open to students of diverse disciplines and majors. They allow for 15 different languages which are: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The program is from the U.S. Department of State. Students must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level, be at least 18 years old by May 15, 2022, and if an undergrad, will need to have completed at least one full year of study.
