Civil Affairs Military Occupation Codes
In the Army, you would find the Civil Affairs Specialist, in MOS 38B.
The Marine Corps has the Civil Affairs Specialist which is MOS 0532.
In the Navy, you can find the Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training Command (MCAST).
The Air Force has 16PX, which is a political-military affairs strategist.

Working in this type of job, you will gain skills such as organizing and analyzing information, writing clearly and concisely, being able to work with foreign governments and militaries, and learning new languages and about different cultures.

Political Scientist
A political scientist studies the origin, development, and operation of political systems. They will collect and analyze data to develop and test political theories, evaluate the effects of policies and laws on governments, businesses, and people, as well as monitor current events and forecast political, economic, and social trends.
In this type of career, you can bring your experience of working with other countries and governments. You would also be able to use your analytical skills, communication skills, creativity, and critical thinking in your position.
In order to work as a political scientist, you should have your master’s degree in public administration, public policy or public affairs or a Ph.D. in Political Science in either national politics, comparative politics, international relations, or political theory.
If you do only have a bachelor’s degree, you may be able to find an entry-level position such as an assistant or research assistant for different organizations, political campaigns, or even a government agency.

Public Relations Specialist
If you are more interested in communicating with the public on behalf of a company, organization, an individual, a politician, or even a part of the government, you might be interested in a career as a public relations specialist. You would be spreading their messages via the media.
As a public relations specialist, you would need to develop press kits, press releases, maintain the identity and reputation of your client, and use polls and social media to find out what people are thinking. You would also cultivate and maintain relationships with the media, write speeches, and track all of your efforts to see if they are working.
Having a bachelor’s degree would be a good idea, but probably won’t be required. Degrees in public relations, marketing, journalism, communications, business, and advertising would be a smart idea.
You would also want to be good at verbal communication, listening to others, writing, and interpersonal skills. You would probably work in an office with some travel to different places while working as a public relations specialist.

Management Consultant
Working as a management consultant means helping a company or government entity plan and execute projects with the desired outcome of being more profitable or competitive.
You would recommend different strategies to help your client become better with their profits, systems, and efficiency. You would probably specialize in either health care, manufacturing, or education and would work with company leadership, work in teams, and most likely for a consulting firm.
You would need at least a bachelor’s degree with a major in business administration, economics, finance, psychology, management, or something similar. Having an MBA would be a good idea.
You can also become a Certified Management Consultant by attending classes and passing an exam. Having self-motivation and self-discipline is important as well as using the skills you have learned in the military such as analytical problem solving, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, time management, and more.

Emergency Management Specialist
If you love being able to help people in their time of need, you can get a job as an emergency management specialist. They work to ease the suffering that can be caused by either man-made or natural disasters.
Emergency management specialists coordinate emergency shelters, work with agencies who can help supervise evacuation routes, make sure people get medicine, food, and water, and help communities apply for funding. In this career, you would plan for long-term or short-term recovery plans, and your schedule might be all over the place.
Having a bachelor’s degree or higher in either emergency management or a similar subject will help you get the right job.
Also helpful are having strong verbal skills, strong written communication skills, knowledge of federal and state financial aid policies, and knowing about emergency alert notifications is also important in this type of job.
The National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP) offers a voluntary certification program that awards the designation of Specialist in Emergency Management (SEM.) In addition, FEMA operates an Emergency Management Institute where both the public and private sectors can attend classes either online or through their training facilities to learn more about the established national guidelines for disaster planning.
