The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test gives insight into what civilian career would be a good fit for you
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB) is a test created in 1968 with the intention of mentally preparing soldiers with knowledge that identifies with the following:
- Space perception
- Numerical operations
- General information
- Tool knowledge
- Coding speed
- Attention to detail
The test has since been changed and updated to test the following areas:
CURRENT ASVAB TEST AREAS
- General Science – measures knowledge of life science, earth and space science, and physical science
- Arithmetic Reasoning – measures ability to solve basic arithmetic word problems
- Word Knowledge – measures ability to understand the meaning of words through synonyms
- Paragraph Comprehension – measures ability to obtain information from written material
- Mathematics Knowledge – measures knowledge of mathematical concepts and applications
- Electronics Information – measures knowledge of electrical current, circuits, devices and electronic systems
- Auto and Shop Information – measures knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair, and wood and metal shop practices
- Mechanical Comprehension – measures knowledge of the principles of mechanical devices, structural support and properties of materials
- Assembling Objects – measures ability with spatial relationships
Is It An IQ Test?
The test is not an IQ test, but rather measures knowledge and ability in the aforementioned areas. It helps the Department of Defense to decipher what your strong suits are and in which jobs you will best perform.
Preparing for the Test
There are 2 different formats of the test: Computerized Test Format and Written Test Format. They each have different amounts of questions and time per section. (Learn about the different formats explained here.)
