Nevada Veterans Benefits Programs

The following are Nevada state-level veteran benefits programs for education, employment, and housing.

Education Benefits for Nevada Veterans

In addition to federal programs such as the GI Bill, there are also veteran benefits programs provided by the state of Nevada.

Waiver of Fees for Members of the Nevada National Guard

The University of Nevada system offers a waiver of tuition and laboratory fees for qualifying active members of the Nevada National Guard.

Waiver of Fees for Children and Surviving Spouses of Nevada National Guard

The University of Nevada system may grant a waiver of tuition and laboratory fees for any child or surviving spouse of a Nevada National Guard member killed in the line of duty. A child may use the waiver for 10 years after they attain the age of 18 years. A surviving spouse may use the waiver for 10 years after the member’s date of death.

Nevada Non-Resident Tuition Exemption

This tuition exemption program is offered to qualifying active duty members stationed in Nevada. “Any active duty service member” with  a permanent change of duty station to a state other than Nevada as well as their spouses and dependent children may be considered Nevada residents for tuition purposes “as long as they remain continuously enrolled at a Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institution.”

State of Nevada Purple Heart Tuition Waiver

Purple Heart recipients may receive a tuition waiver at state-supported schools. This benefit requires all other financial benefits to be used first.

POW/MIA Tuition Benefits

Surviving spouses and dependent children of those missing in action or prisoners of war may use a State of Nevada tuition waiver for ten years. Qualifying circumstances may apply, and you must attend an approved state-supported school.

Housing Benefits for Nevada Veterans

Home is Possible for Heroes Program

Home Is Possible is a program by the Nevada Housing Division. It offers qualifying veterans below-market fixed interest rate 30-year mortgages. on a 30-year loan, Income restrictions and purchase price caps may apply. Minimum FICO score requirements and occupancy of the home purchased under the program also apply.

The Home is Possible for Heroes Program is for veterans who have been honorably discharged, are in the National Guard, are a surviving spouse, or on active duty.

Nevada Property Tax Breaks

Disabled and wartime veterans may qualify for a property tax exemption for a portion of the assessed value of their primary residence. This applies if the veteran is 60% or more disabled due to military service, or if the veteran served for 90 days or more in a wartime period.

Nevada Veterans Homes

There are two Veterans Homes in Nevada, the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks, NV and the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City.

The Northern Nevada State Veterans Home opened in December of 2018 and has 96 beds, private rooms and shared common areas. The Southern Nevada State Veterans Home has 180 beds, nursing services, and a variety of programs, including Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

Potential residents may be veterans, veteran spouses, or Gold Star parents. They need a physician’s referral documenting the need for nursing care that can be met within the parameters of the home’s services.

State Of Nevada Veteran Burial Benefits

The State of Nevada operates two state veteran cemeteries:

Pre-need services are possible, but you may not be allowed to reserve a plot or niche ahead of time physically. There is no charge for the veteran’s burial services, but a nominal fee may be required for spouses and dependents.

Employment Benefits for Nevada Veterans

State of Nevada Veterans Hiring Preference

The State of Nevada adds 10 points to a qualifying veteran’s score if honorably discharged. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans who died in the line of duty also get 10 preference points. 5 preference points are offered to members of the Guard and Reserve and to surviving spouses of veterans.

These preference points are offered for those seeking state employment through competitive exams.

Military Retirement Pay

Nevada does not tax military retirement pay or military disability retirement pay.
