Rhode Island Housing Award Program for Housing Industry Students

Rhode Island Housing Award Program Michael Van Leessten Scholarships are offered on an annual basis for students pursuing education and training related to housing. Additional consideration will be given to veterans.

One award of $5,000 for a student pursuing a license in the construction trades through an apprenticeship or technical school program, or a credential in construction management.

One award of $5,000 for a student pursuing a degree in finance, economics, or public policy, with a focus on mortgage finance and housing markets.

Veterans whose prior service included construction projects or policy analysis, and who are currently seeking a career in the housing industry should consider applying.

RI Housing also seeks applicants from diverse backgrounds who are interested in developing professional experience in the housing policy field. The chosen research fellow will be required to:

Choose a housing issue in Rhode Island to explore in-depth through research, program evaluation, or policy analysis
Independently complete the project and share findings/outcomes with RIHousing leadership and stakeholders.
Attend regular professional development sessions delivered by RIHousing staff and community partners, focused on building relevant skills and learning about different aspects of the housing field.
Assist in other research and policy tasks that support the fellows’ learning goals

Graduate students and undergraduate rising seniors from any relevant background (economics, planning, architecture, public policy, public administration, law, finance, etc.) are eligible to apply. The fellowship is a full-time, 12-week summer program at $15 per hour located in Providence.

To apply, all applicants will need the following:

Completed application form
Resume describing previous work experience and volunteer/community work
Brief essay (no more than 500 words) that explores the following questions:

- What drew you to this career path? What is your ultimate goal in this career path?
- Why are you interested in a career in the housing industry specifically?
- How do you hope to impact the housing landscape in Rhode Island?
Proof of acceptance or enrollment in an accredited apprenticeship, technical/vocational school, community college, or university program

Applicants for the scholarship will need a description of the training program, list of required courses, and estimated fees per course or per academic term

Applicants for the fellowship program will need a transcript and writing sample of less than 500 words.

Michael Van Leesten was a Providence business leader, civil rights activist, and civil servant.
