West Virginia University: Best for Veterans
Deciding on a college that fits your needs is hard enough, but on top of that you have to do the math to see if said institution fits your budget. To keep costs low, many students nowadays choose to stay close to home and take advantage of their in-state tuition benefits.
Interestingly, states are also doing all they can to keep their students from leaving the local area to attend college in other states.
For this reason, we’ve decided to do a series spotlighting the best college or university in each state for those of you who are looking to pay those reduced in-state tuition fees.
West Virginia University
According to Forbes rankings, West Virginia University is the best university in West Virginia because the in-state tuition benefits keep the cost of a degree at WVU low. Out-of-state tuition as an undergraduate costs a whopping $20,424 per year, while in-state tuition will only put you back $6,960.
I chose WVU as the best university in West Virginia because on top of the hefty price cut you receive as an in-state student. There are also loads of helpful programs going on at WVU for student-veterans and military personnel.
I based my ranking on the price for in-state students as well as how many Veteran assistance programs the university has. (I gave an in-depth explanation of the 17 different types of Veterans programs that an institution can participate in in an earlier post.)
Veteran + Military Programs at WVU
West Virginia University provides a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), has a campus Student Veterans of America chapter, a full-time Veterans counselor, Veterans clubs/associations, an ROTC program, participates in VA Principles of Excellence and the Yellow Ribbon Program, offers ACE credit for military experience, follows ACE standards for credit, awards CLEP and DSST Exam credits, and is approved for Military Tuition Assistance funding.
West Virginia University is a public institution in Morgantown, WV currently with 22,563 undergraduate students. It offers around 200 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees. The WVU Mountaineers participate in the Division I Big 12 Conference for all of you sports fans. WVU participates in 12 of 16 student-Veterans programs and has an in-state price tag of less than $7,000 a year.
With all of the above in mind, West Virginia University gets my vote as the best university in WV for those student-Veterans and military personnel looking to pay an in-state tuition rate.
