Midwest Scholarships for Colleges and Universities

The Midwest is a melting pot of cultures, punctuated by legendary cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, and St. Louis. Scholarship opportunities for veterans abound. If you’re a Midwesterner with academic goals, here are some opportunities offered in military friendly colleges that you may want to look into.

AWS William B. Howell Memorial Scholarship

Awards $2,500 (multiple renewable awards)

Description: For a full-time undergraduate student who is pursuing a minimum four-year degree in a welding program at an accredited university. Must be enrolled at least part-time, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and be at least 18. Priority will be given to those individuals residing or attending school in the states of Florida, Michigan and Ohio.

AWS John C. Lincoln Memorial Scholarship

Awards $3,500

Description: For undergraduate students pursuing a minimum four-year bachelor’s degree in welding engineering (WE) or welding engineering technology (WET); however, priority will be given to welding engineering (WE) students. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Priority is given to those individuals residing or attending school in Ohio or Arizona.

Chicago Coalition for the Homeless Scholarships

Awards $3,500 (multiple renewable awards)

Description: For Chicago graduating high school seniors who succeeded in school despite coping personally with homelessness. Minimum GPA 2.5

Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award

Awards $10,000 (up to 15 awards)

Description: For Iowa high school juniors who propose and then accomplish a project of their own choosing and design. Grades, test scores, essays, and financial need are not evaluated.

Iowa Financial Know-how Senior Scholarship

Awards $1,000 (50 awards)

Description: For all Iowa high school seniors, regardless of financial need, grade point average, class rank or intended college. The registered students with the top 30 scores each receive a scholarship.

Iowa UMF Scholarships

Awards $2,150

Description: For all Iowa students who demonstrate academic and community excellence and have maintained a faithful membership with the United Methodist Church. Applicants for this scholarship must intend to attend a United Methodist college.

Illinois AMVETS Foundation Service Scholarships

Awards up to $2,000 (multiple awards)

Description: For honorably discharged veterans who have an Illinois address, and are enrolled as a full-time student 2 or 4 year College or University, Vocational or Technical School in Illinois.

Illinois CPA Foundation Scholarships

Awards vary. Multiple awards

Description: For accounting students and CPA candidates who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership qualities, and financial need. Annually the Fund awards approximately $200,000 in scholarships and outreach support to more than 170 of the most diverse and deserving accounting students across the state of Illinois.

Iowa Scholarship for the Arts

Awards $2,500 (Multiple awards)

Description: For Iowa high school seniors who excel and demonstrate a commitment to pursuing an education and career in the arts. Applicants must also plan to attend college in Iowa and major in the fine arts.

Junior Horizon Award

Award Varies

Description: For Michigan high school women who intend to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.) careers related to the national security and defense interests of the United States. Must be planning to attend a Michigan university or college. Minimum GPA 3.25

Karen George Speech Therapy Scholarship

It appears that this scholarship is no longer active! 

Awards $2,500

Description: For students admitted to or attending graduate school to become a speech-language pathologist who is attending a school OR has a permanent address in one of these Midwest states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, or Wisconsin.

Kids Chance of Michigan

Awards up to $5,000 (multiple awards)

Description: For Michigan residents, between the ages of 17-22, whose parents have been catastrophically injured or killed in a work-related accident covered by workers’ compensation. c

The Minnesota Child Care Grant

Awards $6,500

Description: For low-income Minnesota students who have young children pay for child care while the student attends classes. (The child must be 12 years old or younger (or 14 or younger if the child is disabled). Students must be enrolled for at least six credits per term, and not have completed four years of post-secondary education.

The Minnesota Masonic Charities Scholarship

Awards $2,500 – $6,000 (multiple awards)

Description: For high school seniors. Candidates must be graduating from a Minnesota high school and must plan to attend a four-year higher education program, with a 3.6-3.89 GPA.

The PMI Robert J. Yourzak Scholarship

 Awards up to $2,000

Description: For Minnesota students pursuing graduate or undergraduate degrees in Project Management or related fields of study from accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities anywhere in the world.

The Sean Silver Memorial Scholarship

2021 Update: Ulman Foundation has decided to discontinue its scholarship program

Awards $2,500 (multiple awards)

Description: For applicants who are degree seeking United States citizens, age 15-30 who are currently undergoing active treatment for cancer and reside in the Chicago area.

The SET Educational Fund

Awards $6,500

Description:  Michigan students who can demonstrate financial need who have excelled scholastically while volunteering their time to help others. Must be enrolled at an accredited college/university in Michigan.

The SFM Foundation Scholarship

Awards Up to $15,000

Description:  For natural, adopted, or stepchildren of workers disabled or fatally injured in work-related accidents. during the course and scope of employment with a Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Iowa-based employer.

Awards $3,000-$5,000

Description: For students who have already demonstrated a commitment to peace and justice to strive for peace and justice both in their educational pursuits and in their personal and professional lives. Applicant must be a resident of (or currently attending school in) Minnesota.
