Biomedical Engineering Degrees

Drexel University describes the field of Biomedical Engineering as a diverse and challenging career. As just one example, Drexel notes,"Biomedical engineers might research and test biomaterials suitable for a medical implant, such as an artificial ankle replacement" or  "work on large-scale manufacturing of a new drug."

Biomedical Engineering is an option for students who want to learn about medicine but don't necessarily want to work in treatment or care facilities. It's an option for those with a keen interest in STEM topics. Graduates typically work in manufacturing, universities, hospitals, and research facilities, among many other options.

Those with a biomedical engineering degree can design instruments, devices, and software used in healthcare. They can also design electrical circuits, software to run medical equipment, and computer simulations to test new drug theories.

People who have good analytical skills, communication skills, creativity, math skills, and problem-solving skills do well in this field.

Licensing

In order to work in the field of biomedical engineering as a consultant or offer services to the public, you must be licensed. The guidelines for this depend on the state and requirements may vary. However, for all states, must pass exams administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Siebel Scholarships

Getting your degree in biomedical engineering means you can apply for certain scholarships that specialize in engineering or similar degrees. One is the Siebel Scholars program, recognizing the most talented students at the world’s leading graduate schools of business, computer science, bioengineering and, and energy science.

Through this program, the scholars will form an active, lifelong community and an ever-growing group of leaders. There will be multiple awards, at $35,000 for students to use in their final year of graduate studies.  For more info, please go here.
