What is a History Degree?

High school history focuses more on dates and facts, while a History Degree in college teaches students to examine the past through analysis and evaluation critically. By doing this, they learn how history impacts the present and will shape the future.

A History major takes courses that span various times, regions, and countries around the world. History meshes with multiple disciplines, including business, politics, and the arts. Students learn the comprehension, writing, and research skills that many occupations require.

A history degree can open up many opportunities for students. Museum curation, archival management, and historic preservation are just a few career paths they can take. Is a History Degree Hard?

If you think you'll have an easy time taking history, think again. It is one of the more reading-heavy majors, and you must retain what you read. Studying may take up to 15 hours, if not more, per week.

History requires students to have different perspectives, understand complex timelines, and understand the social, political, economic, and cultural contexts of whatever era they’re studying. The ability to participate in debates based on historical evidence is also part of the process. Regardless, it is a rewarding degree for those passionate about the past.

Is a History Degree worth it?

A History Degree can be worthwhile because the critical thinking skills you learn are greatly coveted in the work world. With your choice of minors, you have no shortage of jobs. This degree can open doors to education, research, museums, journalism, and business careers.

Associate’s Degree in History

This program teaches students basic critical thinking, communication, and research skills. They’ll learn academic writing and focus on historical context as it relates to our present and future. Early education courses may also be part of an Associate’s Degree.

This four-year degree allows students to analyze major historical events and learn how these events bring context to our present. It provides students with a deeper meaning of past relationships between people and societies in light of today’s culture and issues. Schools offer different concentrations or themes in their programs.

A graduate degree in history allows students to specialize in a niche area of the past. For example, they may focus their studies on medieval Europe, early North American, or East Asian history. This focus may also be thematic, such as economic or military history.

Troy University- Troy University offers Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in History, as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s in American History and European History. It has GI Bill-approved programs, offers credit for military experience, awards credit for CLEP and DSST exams, and is approved for Tuition Assistance. Troy University is a MyCAA-approved school and a participant in the Yellow Ribbon program.

Quinnipiac University- Quinnipiac University offers Bachelor’s Degrees in History and a Master’s in History Teacher Education . Quinnipiac University has GI Bill-approved programs, offers credit for military experience, and awards credit for the CLEP exam. Quinnipiac University is a Yellow Ribbon school, approved for tuition assistance, and a MyCAA-approved school.
