Information Science Degrees for Military and Veterans
According to the University of Michigan School of Information,"Information science is the study of how information is created, organized, managed, stored, retrieved, and used. It is an interdisciplinary field that combines aspects of computer science, library science, and information management."Information scientists study topics such as data management, information retrieval, information architecture, data mining, and knowledge management. They design and develop systems and technologies to support the efficient and effective creation, storage, and use of information.
Students studying Information Science will learn how information is managed and how it is stored, organized, retrieved and represented.
The coursework focuses on all properties and behaviors of information and its flow. This field evolves rapidly, so students learn to stay on top of the many swift changes in information architecture, security, and database management.
While there is some overlap between an Information Science Degree and a Computer Science Degree, the two have distinct differences.
An Information Science Degree prepares students for careers in information systems organization and management, Computer Science prepares them to design and develop computer systems and software.
What Can You Do With An Information Science Degree?
All industries need information science professionals. Tech companies, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, government agencies, media, retail and more require professionals with expertise in this area.Because all industries rely on data, there will always be lucrative work for the Information Sciencemajor. Systems analyst, data analyst or administrator, information architect and user experience (UX) designer are just some of the job titles out there that come with competitive salaries. Graduates in these roles can work as independent contractors, consultants or entrepreneurs.
Is an Information Science Degree Hard?
Students who have a passion for math, science, technology and research will find Information Science fascinating; however, it is by no means easy. Students engage in theoretical coursework in data analysis, database management, programming, and information systems theory, as well as in more practical studies, such as data retrieval and human-computer interaction. This mix of abstract and applied concepts may be challenging to some, but others may (and do) excel in this major.
Is Information Science Worth It?
A person with an Information Science Degree may find many well-paying opportunities. Even students holding a Bachelor’s Degree can find lucrative work—although, the more advanced the degree, the more money they’ll inevitably make. The median salary for Information Sciences majors is in the low six-figures.GI BIll and Yellow Ribbon Program Options for Degrees in Information Science
