According to the University of Florida, "Women’s Studies explores how gender affects people’s lives and how it connects with other social systems such as race, class, and sexuality." Those majoring in Women’s Studies examines gender roles in various areas, such as anthropology, history, media, and sociology. Students learn to think differently and raise questions about class, gender, ethnicity, and race. Those holding a degree in Women’s Studies can find work in all industries, from medicine to the arts.

Is a Women's Studies Degree Hard?

Women’s Studies (as well as Ethnic and LBGTQ studies) can be difficult for some students as they require abstract thinking. Students are encouraged to question aspects of society that they experienced or learned about in their earlier years.

They learn to view everything differently, from family dynamics to the cartoons they grew up on and the school books they were given in elementary school. Classes focus on the changing role of women in society and institutional discrimination.

A Women's Studies Degree is highly versatile, allowing students to find jobs in nearly any industry. It requires strong critical thinking and research skills, as well as top-notch reading comprehension and writing ability.

It allows students to understand how people interact based on gender, a crucial need in businesses today. Degree-holders do not have to get jobs that specifically relate to women, but they can find jobs that involve critical thinking.

Some jobs are more lucrative than others, but regardless of pay, many degree recipients find satisfaction in working in their community for advocacy organizations and charities focused on women, for example, in social work or in domestic violence shelters.

Students may also continue their education by focusing on a graduate degree and becoming lawyers, therapists, or university professors.
