STEM Scholarships for Women and Girls

Did you know that there are actually more women focusing on STEM majors than men overall? However, that is due to health professions such as nursing. There are not as many women in majors related to computers, engineering, and physical science which represent a large part of STEM fields. One thing that can help women in STEM to succeed is being able to have the money they need to pay for college.  Here’s a list of 12 scholarships just for women and girls in STEM to help pay for their education.

Employment in STEM-related occupations has already grown 79% since 1990. However, STEM jobs are expected to continue to grow 13% from 2017 until 2027.

VIP Women in Technology Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $2,500

The Details: The VIP Women in Technology Scholarship is sponsored by Visionary Integration Professionals, which is a leading provider of technology solutions that drive enterprise performance. Students must be female and enrolled at or accepted into a two or four-year college or university within the US. They must be planning a career in computer science, information technology, management information systems, or another related field.

Find Scholarships for Military and Veterans, including for STEM

Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $1,000

The Details: This scholarship is sponsored by the ASA Committee on Women in Statistics and Caucus for Women in Statistics to encourage more women to enter statistically oriented professions. There will be two recipients, one to a woman in or entering the early stages of graduate training at the master’s degree or Ph.D. level and one to a woman in a more advanced stage of training. There will also be honorable mentions. Students need to be women in the US or Canada, who are admitted to full-time study in a graduate statistics program.

Ralph W. Shrader Graduate Diversity Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $3,000

The Details: This scholarship is from a generous contribution from Booz Allen Hamilton. The award is given to three full-time women, and minority students, enrolled in their 2nd semester, with at least two semester-equivalent courses completed. They also need to be currently pursuing a graduate degree at any accredited academic institution in the US and living in a way that supports the mission of the AFCEA Educational Foundation. Their focus should be on STEM or hard sciences. There is a list of qualifying majors on their website, including statistics.

The Science Ambassador Scholarship

One recipient, Full-tuition

The Details: This scholarship is for full-tuition for a woman in STEM, funded by Cards Against Humanity. Students would need to film a 3-minute educational video of themselves explaining a STEM topic they are passionate about. The scholarship is open to high school seniors or undergraduates. If a student hasn’t picked a major yet, they need to have plans to pursue a STEM subject while they are in college.

Aysen Tunca Memorial Scholarship

One recipient, $2,500

The Details: This scholarship was established to honor Aysen Tunca who was born in Turkey in 1938. It is to recognize a female undergraduate student majoring in a STEM field, excelling in their studies, and demonstrating significant potential. Preferably it would be for a student with a disadvantaged economic background or someone who overcame significant obstacles in her life or someone who is the first person in her family to go to college or major in a STEM field. Students need to be in their sophomore or junior year of college and need to be undergraduate members of the SPS National Organization.

Palantir Women in Technology Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $7,000

The Details: This scholarship is to celebrate and support women who are beginning their careers in technology, to help encourage women to pursue computer science, engineering, and technical studies, and to become leaders in these fields. Winners will receive $7,000 and will be invited to visit the headquarters in Palo Alto for a full-day all-expenses-paid developmental workshop.

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Academic Scholarship

One recipient, $2,000

The Details: This scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholarship and participation in SPS. It is supported by SSAI. Students need to be in their sophomore or junior year of college and need to be undergraduate members of the SPS National Organization. They need to be majoring in physics or a related science.

Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship

Multiple recipients, $4,000

The Details: This scholarship is named after the American chemist, biochemist, and engineer Virginia “Ginny” Heinlein. The scholarship is for 4-year undergraduates working on a bachelor’s degree, majoring in engineering, mathematics, or biological or physical sciences. Students must be going to school full-time and be female.

AWIS Kirsten R. Lorentzen Scholarship

One recipient, $2,000

The Details: This scholarship is an AWIS Educational Foundation program for female college sophomores and juniors. Students must be studying physics, including space physics and geophysics or geoscience. The award will go to a well-rounded student who excels in her studies as well as outdoor activities, service, sports, music, or other non-academic pursuits or someone who has overcome significant obstacles. It is administered by SPS and may be used for any aspect of education, including tuition, books, housing, or travel. Students must be undergraduate members of the SPS National Organization.

Women in STEM Study.com Scholarship

One recipient, $2,000

The Details: This scholarship awards one $2,000 award to a female student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree program that emphasizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). They must be enrolled or accepted in an accredited college or university and are planning on continuing the next year.

Anne Maureen Whitney Barrow Memorial Scholarship

One recipient, $9,000

The Details: This scholarship is sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers and is open to women freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior college students who are majoring in engineering. They must be planning to study at an ABET-accredited program, studying full-time. They also can’t be fully funded by another source.
