Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree Give to Military Families

Operation Homefront Teams Up With Dollar Tree to Help Military Families

For the 13th consecutive school year, Operation Homefront is teaming up with Dollar Tree – which has 130 events across the US this year– to launch the annual “Back-to-School Brigade” program.

The program is a nationwide school supply collection and distribution campaign that, since its inception, has provided more than 450,000 backpacks full of supplies to military children.

From mid-July through August, you can purchase supplies at one of the 7,600 nationwide-participating Dollar Tree stores to then donate to Operation Homefront for distribution at one of the 130 “Back-to-School Brigade” events this summer.

To date, this program has helped save military families more than $50 million in school-related expenses. Operation Homefront president and CEO Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., commented, “As the pandemic continues to create significant and often overwhelming financial hardships on our military families, the entire Dollar Tree family shares our unwavering commitment to helping this very special and deserving group in their time of need for all they have done for all of us in our nation’s time of need.”

There are a number of upcoming distribution events across the country for this year’s program. Visit the events page for all 2021 locations and applicable registrations.

Want to Volunteer to Help?

If you are interested in being a volunteer or supporter, there are multiple ways to get involved. You can set up a collection bin at your office, store, church, or school for supplies or gift cards. Signage is provided by the program; simply contact your local field office through this link.

Becoming a pick-up or distributing volunteer in your area is also a helpful option; go here to set up a volunteer account and get more information.

Lastly, you can simply make a tax-deductible donation to Operation Homefront which will go to help military families through this Back-to-School Brigade initiative or other programs.

Who Is Operation Homefront?

About Converse

Marquis Mills Converse was a previous manager at a footwear manufacturing firm and opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in 1908 in Malden, MA. Originally, they produced winterized rubber soled footwear for men, women, and children.

By 1910, Converse was producing shoes daily.  They started with athletic shoes in 1915. In 1917, they introduced their Converse All-Star basketball shoe.

During World War II, they shifted production to manufacturing rubberized footwear, outerwear, and protective suits in the military. Afterwards, they resumed their athletic footwear when the war was over.

the company transformed sports footwear in 1917 with the development of an innovative, rubber-soled, ankle-stabilizing shoe for basketball known today as “Chuck Taylor All-Stars” or “Chucks.”

The shoes were named after the semi-pro basketball player who became a salesman for Converse, Charles Taylor. He shared his ideas for improving the shoe and over a century later, the style is seen all over the world.

Classic Chucks, trendy platforms, and Pro Leather versions of iconic styles – Converse captures today’s street culture. Their shoes, clothes and accessories reflect a commitment to “celebrating freedom of expression through individuals and their movement(s).”

Production moved overseas in 2001, and Footwear Acquisitions purchased the brand, followed by Nike’s acquisition of the brand in 2003.

Today, Converse has over 100 stores in the US and 63 stores around the world. Their headquarters are in Boston, MA.

About Adidas

Adidas Shoes started as a German company. They design and manufacture shoes, clothing, and accessories.

They were founded by Adolf “Adi” Dassler who made sports shoes in his mother’s scullery in Herzogenaurach, Germany after his return from World War I.

In 1924, his older brother Rudolf joined the business and they became Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. They assisted in the development of spiked running shoes.

During World War II, they were able to spare their factories by convincing the GIs that the company, as well as the employees, just wanted to make shoes. American occupying forces also became major buyers of their shoes.

The brothers had a falling out and split up in 1947. Rudolf started Puma and Dassler formed Adidas AG in 1949. The brothers never reconciled and there was business rivalry between the two as well as within Herzogenaurach.

Adidas Three-Striped Logo

The three-striped logo was acquired in 1952 and the company was bought by a French industrialist after the death of Adolf Dassler’s son in 1987. Soon after production was moved to Asia.

In 2006, they started a deal with the NBA.

Today, you can find Adidas in many different stores and as of 2015, there were 30 stores in the US and 460 globally. Their headquarters are in Herzogenaurach, Germany and they offer a 15% off student discount.

Save With Back-To-School Tax-Free Weekends and AAFES

Back-To-School season is here. Depending on where you live or if you shop at AAFES, there are additional ways to save.  Timing your shopping to the Back-to-School Tax-Free Weekends are a great way to save even more money!

States With Back-To-School Tax-Free Weekends

During these tax-free weekends, you can shop for items such as clothing, shoes, and school supplies tax-free. Each of the states has different dates and might have slightly different rules for what qualifies. Additionally, all AAFES customers can save, too, during this time.

Exchange Offering Extra Savings for 2022-2023 School Year

The Army & Air Force Exchange Services announced that during this year’s back-to-school shopping season, Exchange shoppers will be able to take advantage of extra savings.

Some Exchanges are participating in the sales-tax holiday by offering discounts on eligible back-to-school items. The discount will be equal to the local sales tax rate in the area of the participating Exchange.

Currently when shopping at the Exchange military members and their dependents do not pay sales tax, that is why they have chosen to use this opportunity to offer an extra discount based on local sales tax rates.

This added discount will be a welcomed opportunity to save money on school supplies. It is important to keep in mind that this discount is only being offered in stores and not online.

If you are interested in either one of these discounts, you might be wondering how the discounts compare to their regular prices. Here is a list of the different products, what the discount would be, and how much the regular price is, based on April 2022 prices.

As a student, you may qualify for student discounts. A lot of restaurants offer them on a location by location basis. As a member of the military, you will qualify for military discounts at different restaurants as well. Remember to keep in mind that they can also vary by location and can change whenever the company decides to do so.

Here are ten of them to try:

Shoney’s

Shoney’s has an “Our Heroes” discount which is 15% off for the men and women of the armed forces. This discount is only at participating locations.

Papa Murphy’s

Limited stores do offer various discounts to include military discounts on their take and bake pizza. While this isn’t a sit-down restaurant, these pizzas are perfect a quick meal at home.

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel sometimes has a military discount, although this is based on the individual restaurant. You might be able to find between 10-30% off and can use the discount in the store too.

They may not offer a military discount the rest of the year, but they do during that week, or even just on Veterans Day.

You would need to show them the proper ID or the paperwork that they require.

Rumored to Have Discounts

When it comes to military discount, it can sometimes be hard to track who has one and who doesn’t. Sometimes just a few locations offer it, as so many discounts can depend on what the manager of that particular franchise wants to do.

Cheap Textbooks: How to Save Money on College Textbooks

Everyone would prefer cheap textbooks.  Or at least cheaper textbooks. According to the recent estimates by the CollegeBoard.org, the average student is paying more than $1,200 per year on textbooks and supplies.

For those using the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you will receive $1,000 for books per year. This means that you may end up paying out-of-pocket costs for books.

But we have some ideas to help you to save money on textbooks.

Cheap Textbooks: How to Save Money on Textbooks

The costs of going to school includes tuition, fees, room and board, supplies, and of course textbooks.

These are the books you will need for each of your classes. You will be told which books you need so you can prepare ahead of time.

As you take your list to your school bookstore, you can become quickly overwhelmed with the prices.

There are however other options to help save you money on textbooks.

Campus Bookstore

First, don’t go to the campus bookstore! Going to the campus bookstore is a guaranteed way to spend more money.  While it may be convenient, you’re paying a premium for that convenience.

Use Comparison Sites

You can compare prices across a few different online sites through the following websites.

Often you can use the ISBN number to search for editions of textbooks to find where to get the best price.

In many cases, you can compare options to buy as well as rent.

Shop Around

You should try to look in other stores and websites to shop for cheap textbooks.

There could be some books you can only get from your college’s bookstore, but a lot of them can be a bit cheaper if you purchase them from other places.

Buy Used Textbooks

The main thing about textbooks is that they don’t have to be brand new.

Many students sell their books back to the college or even online, and you should be able to buy a good quality used textbook.

Your college bookstore might have used copies, and you can search online bookstores to see if you can find them there for a better rate.

Rent Textbooks

Renting textbooks has become a modern way to save money with your textbooks. You can rent them through companies such as

When renting textbooks, you will need to be careful about highlighting and marking up the textbook.

Make sure to check with the company about what their rules and regulations when renting textbooks.

Check Your Library

Libraries, both on campus and off could have textbooks you can borrow.

Check and see how long you can borrow them for and if this would be a good option for you.

Most university libraries will allow you to check out the books for a few hours at a time if need be but there might be other options for more extended periods of time.

Ebooks

There could be a chance that some or all of the textbooks you need can be found in ebook format. This can make things easier and even a little cheaper.

You can search for these ebooks online on websites such as Amazon, or TextbookRush.com. You can pull these books up on a computer, tablet, or your phone.

Find A Friend

If you know someone who is also taking the same class, you could talk with them about sharing the cost of the textbook and sharing the book during the semester.

You would need to make sure that each of you would be able to have access to the book when you need it for this option to work for you.

Older Editions

If you can find an older edition of the textbook that you know will still hold up, that can be an excellent way to save on cheap textbooks.

You don’t want to go too far back, but in a lot of cases, you don’t need to have the newest edition.

Speak with your professor about a particular edition if you are not sure about if that book will work.

One thing to keep in mind is that if the syllabus has page numbers to go by, they could differ by edition.

Sell Them

However much you spend on your books, make plans to sell them after the semester is over. That way you can make back some of your money. Most college and university bookstores will buy back your books.

If you have books from your major or ones that are very interesting to you, they can be worth keeping and putting on your bookshelf.

Here are some sites that may purchase your books from you.

Campus Bookstore – don’t forget your campus bookstore for selling back the book.  Sometimes, due to their higher mark-up, they can buy them from you at a higher price.

Financial Aid

With financial aid, you might receive money just for books. This is, of course, another way to keep your costs down.

Of course, everyone wants to save time and money and get cheap textbooks.  But with a little time and effort, you can save money.  More importantly, none of that money will be out of your own pocket!

Southwest Military Discount

Hearing about companies that have a military discount allows you to save money and that is a good thing. With the cost of travel so high these days, finding a military discount on your airline tickets is a way to save money, especially if you want to fly home to visit family or send your child back home for school breaks during college.

The Southwest military discount offers a way for you to save on travel.  But is it the best deal out there?

Southwest Military Discount – What’s the Deal?

Southwest does have a military discount, although it is considered a military fare. Understanding what that means is essential. It isn’t as simple as paying for your flight and getting 10-15% off as you might find with other military discounts.

Never miss a military discount!  Sign up for Military Discount Newsletter.

Southwest Airlines Military Fare is not always the cheapest rate

The biggest thing to know about the Southwest military rate is that it isn’t always the cheapest way to get a ticket with them. When you are trying to get the military discount you have to call them on the phone, you can not do this online.

Usually, when booking tickets with Southwest, you can do so using their website or app. When you go to search, you will see a few different rates for each choice. One of those rates is called, “Wanna Get Away.” These rates tend to be cheaper than the rates you get by calling and asking for a military one.

Because of this, you should always call Southwest and ask about the current military rate for that flight. Then compare that rate with their current “Wanna Get Away” rate to see which is a better price. In some cases, they might not even have military rate flights available for when you want to fly.

Overall the Southwest military discount is perfect for when you need to make last-minute travel plans. In those cases, the “Wanna Get Away” prices can be booked up, and you might be left with very high prices. Regular rates can sometimes be over half what the “Wanna Get Away” or the military rate might be.

Who’s eligible for the discount?

According to Southwest, “United States military personnel on active duty (including reservists, National Guard members, and Coast Guard members with active orders, cadets/midshipmen attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy [West Point], and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and their authorized dependents are eligible for Military fares.”

Bags: Does Southwest charge the military for bags?

Southwest does not charge anyone for their first two bags as long as they are under 50 lbs each.

If you are on active duty you will not be charged for more than two bags.

If you are on non-active duty on orders, you will also not be charged for more than two bags.

Southwest offers no cancellation fees for military

Even though you might not be able to get the military fare while booking your Southwest trip, it is good to know their cancellation policy.

As a service member, times and dates change, and you might need to change the date of your trip. Southwest will not charge you a fee for this change.  However, you will need to use your ticket within a year, and it is not transferable to someone else.

This can give you some comfort when booking your tickets and think there is a chance something could change.

Military can board the flight early

As of September 2022, all active duty military members, even if not wearing the uniform, can board early. You would need to show your military ID.

Should you use this discount?

If you are planning a trip or need to fly your college student home, make sure to look into the Southwest military rates. Taking the time to compare rates can save you some money.

If you are unable to use the military discount but can use the “Wanna Get Away” rate you will still be able to save money.

The military rate can also save you money if you do need to book tickets on an emergency basis and all the “Wanna Get Away” tickets have been sold.

Southwest does not fly overseas, other than Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, so if you are stationed OCONUS, they will not be an option for you to fly home to visit.

To ask about military fares, call 1-800-I-Fly-SWA.

NOTE: Due to the nature of military discounts, the terms listed above could change at any time. Always make sure to check with the company directly for the most updated information.

Cost of College: What Does Your Education Cost?

After you decide to go to college, whether you are a high school senior, or have been serving in the military for ten years, you will need to figure out the costs of college as well as how you will be paying for everything. The costs associated with going to college differ based on the school, your living situation, and if you are going to go to school full or part-time.

Here is a breakdown of the costs associated with school and how you can help pay for them:

Paying for College Tuition

Your tuition is the cost of instruction. Colleges can charge this by semester, quarter, or even credit hours. Public universities have an in-state rate and an out-of-state rate. To be considered in-state you most likely will need to have been living in that state for a full year. Tuition rates can be different based on your major too.

Paying For Fees

College fees are for services associated with the college or university. They usually include things like the library, student government, and activities. They will vary based on the school and what they have to offer.

Often schools combine the tuition and fees into one amount. You should make sure to check out the breakdown, so you know exactly what the money’s for.

According to the College Board, the average tuition and fees for the 2017-2018 year were:

  • $34,740 for private schools
  • $9,970 for in-state public schools
  • $25,620 for out-of-state public schools

For Veterans, or members of the military community using the Post-9/11 GI Bill:

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is going to be one of the primary ways you can pay for your tuition and fees. The GI Bill should be able to cover the cost of going to any public college and up to $23,671.94 for a private school

Note 1: That is the rate as of August 1st, 2018. Prior to August 1st it’s $22,805.34.

Note 2: As of Veterans Day 2015, all 50 states provide in-state tuition to veterans regardless of official state of residence.  So there is no out-of-state cost of tuition for veterans using their GI Bill.

If you, however, need them to pay for more than that, you can look into the Yellow Ribbon program which will allow you to have the school and the VA pay the difference between the annual maximum cap that the GI Bill pays and the actual cost of the school.

Tuition Assistance is also a way to have your tuition paid for. The terms vary by your branch but all of them include paying up to $250 per credit hour, and the money is paid directly to the school.

RELATED:

Paying for College Room and Board

No matter who you are, you will have to pay to live during the time you go to college. For a more traditional college student, this can mean living on campus in the dorms. If this is what you are planning to do, there will be a certain amount that you would have to pay per semester or year to live there. You might have different options based on the school and what they have available to you.

If you are a freshman or sophomore, there could be a requirement to live on campus at your school. This will depend on the rules of the college or university. In other cases, there could be a waiting list to live on campus.

If you decide to live off campus, instead of room and board you would pay for your rent and any living expenses. If you are trying to decide what is cheaper, you would want to take a look at the cost of rent in the area, what your share would be if you had a roommate, and compare that to the school’s room and board costs.

Dining plans are also a part of room and board, and those can be flexible. You might want to get a full plan paying for three meals a day or a smaller plan assuming you won’t have all of your meals in the dining hall.

The average costs of room and board for the 2017-2018 year was $10,800 for a four-year public school and $12,210 for a private college or university.

The Post 9/11-GI Bill will give you a monthly housing allowance based on BAH rates for the state you plan to live in. This money will go straight to you and you could use it towards room and board, or living off-campus.

RELATED: Calculate Your BAH With Our BAH Calculator

Books and Supplies

Another college expense would be books and supplies. These sometimes include a computer or other required equipment. You can buy used textbooks to save money, and some schools allow you to rent them.

The average costs for books and supplies for the 2017-2018 school year was $1,250 for a public school and $1,220 for a private school.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill will give you $1,000 a year to help pay the cost of books. Due to the averages listed above, most likely that will cover all or almost all of your books and supplies.

Personal Expenses

You will have personal expenses while going to school such as the cost of transportation, a cell phone, and entertainment costs. These are usually costs you would have anyway, even if you were not going to school, but they are good to be aware of when planning your budget for the school year. If you live on campus and only have to go on a short walk to get to your classes, you will be paying a lot less than if you live 30 minutes from campus and have to commute.

Scholarships can be a good way to find the pay to pay for your schooling beyond the GI Bill and Tuition Assistance. This is even more important for military spouses. While some military spouses can qualify and receive MYCAA, not everyone can, and that might not be enough.

There are scholarships such as the AMVETS, which gives $4,000 each year, Fisher House for Military Children which gives $2,000 or Pat Tillman which can give you an average of $10,000 for school. Scholarships usually always pay for tuition and fees and sometimes for room and board, and books and supplies. There are different terms based on the award on what you can use the money for.

CLEP and DSST are exams you can take to receive college credit. Taking these exams means not having to take as many classes. This can lower your tuition rates, and if you can take enough of them, you can even shave off a semester or even a year from your college plan. You can also get college credit for your military service through ACE, which is the American Council on Education that evaluates military service for college credit.

Using the data from CollegeRecon, here is a comparison of costs based on a few different educational options:

The University of Maryland – Public

Tuition and Fees: In-state-$10,399, Out-of-state-$33,606

Room and Board: $12,004

Books and Supplies: $1,250

Other Expenses: $2,440

Total: In-state-$26,093, Out-of-state-$49,300

Baylor University – Private

Tuition and Fees: $43,970

Room and Board: $12,163

Books and Supplies: $1,200

Other Expenses: $3,080

Total: $60,413

San Diego State University – Public

Tuition and Fees: In-state-$7,460, Out-of-state-$19,340

Room and Board: $15,966

Books and Supplies: $1,854

Other Expenses: $2,944

Total: In-state-$28,224, Out-of-state-$40,104

Yale University – Private

Tuition and Fees: $51,400

Room and Board: $15,500

Books and Supplies:$3,670

Other Expenses: $720

Total: $71,290

Although seeing the full figure of admission cost for colleges and universities can be overwhelming, as a military service member, spouse or dependent, you do have many options. There are a lot of ways to pay for school that doesn’t include having to pay 100% of the costs yourself. Make sure to take advantage of any program you qualify for so you can have the best experience when it comes to paying for college.

Space A Travel

Military members and their families may be eligible for free DoD flights via Space A, short for Space Available. Military flights occur every day, and for efficiency, the flights are filled to capacity. If a surplus exists after seats and cargo are filled, those on standby in various categories are eligible for FREE air travel. Here is how Space A can work for you and your military family.

  • Explore worldwide destinations. The most common destinations are in many parts of the US (including Hawaii and Alaska), Germany, England, Spain, Italy, Japan and South Korea. Less frequent destinations include South and Central America, Africa, and Australia. The best time of the year to travel is while kids are in school, as it is more difficult to find a seat during summer break. Schedules of available flights, days and times are posted online.
  • Establish which category you fall into. If you’re traveling as a family and your servicemember is with you, you are in category three. If your service member is deployed, you can still take advantage of travel as a dependent, you will just be bumped into category four. Full category information is available online.

Space A Categories (these determine order of selection):

  • Category 1 – Emergency Leave
  • Category 2 – Environmental Morale Leave (EML)
  • Category 3 – Ordinary Leave
  • Category 4 – Unaccompanied Dependents on EML
  • Category 5 – Permissive Temporary Duty and Students
  • Category 6 – Retirees
  • Bring required IDs and paperwork (passports, visas, immunizations if applicable). Active duty members can sign up for flights when your leave pass is signed, and dependents traveling unaccompanied will require a signed and dated Space A letter. Keep in mind that you may not secure a flight on your first or even second attempt, but if your travel plans are flexible, this makes a very cost-effective option. Required paperwork is outlined online.
  • Other need-to-know tips. If you score a flight, know that a Patriot Express flight is a traditional commercial option and will have food available. On military cargo flights, you may be in jump seats and have the option of purchasing a box lunch for about $5.00. It is also recommended that if on a military flight, you pack ear plugs as the flight can be noisy.

What is EML? This program is designed to provide environmental relief from a duty station which has some “drawbacks” and to offer a source of affordable recreation otherwise not available. A large portion of this travel occurs in the Middle and Far East areas.

If you’re willing to be patient and jump through some hoops, Space A can get you and your military family where you need to be for next to nothing, saving hundreds or thousands of dollars. Learn more here.

Pro Tip: If your service member is deployed, you can still use Space A Travel!

USO

Long airport layovers (with or without kids) can be tiresome and challenging. It’s easy to spend far too much money on food, sometimes you have to pay for wifi, and all you want is a quiet place to grab a bite to eat and unwind. Good news — USO airport locations provide a relaxing lounge atmosphere for active duty military and their families. Here’s what you need to know.

  • It costs nothing to enter an airport USO lounge. Be sure to bring your valid military ID and simply sign in with one of the volunteers at the front desk.
  • Dependents are granted access without their primary service member, as long as an ID is provided.
  • The USO provides vouchers for free food, and offer coffee, free wifi, television, comfy chairs, outlets to recharge your devices, luggage storage, playrooms with toys and sometimes even sleep rooms for a quick nap (dependent on location).

Instead of roughing it in a food court or paying for an expensive lounge, take your milfam to the nearest airport USO during your next trip. To learn more, click here.

Pro Tip: Dependents may still use the lounge, even if the service member isn’t with them!

As they say, time is money. If you invest just a little bit of time and effort into locating and securing travel discounts and benefits for your military family, it can pay off in a big way. Hopefully you found at least one of these travel tips for military families helpful. Bon voyage!

Stretch Your GI Bill Dollars

It may not seem like you’re saving much when it’s $100 per credit hour. It’s important to note that it typically takes you 120 credit hours to reach a bachelor’s degree.  Even at $100 savings per credit hour this would add up to about $12,000 total over the course of getting your degree.

This could help you stretch your GI Bill education benefits to further your educational goals.  whether you’re looking for an advanced degree or attempting to gain your bachelor’s degree while still in the service.

There are plenty of “military friendly colleges” but beyond that, these colleges with military discounts help keep money in your pocket.  These discounts can be for active duty, reserves, National Guard, veterans as well as their spouses and children.

Often community colleges can offer discounts as well. Make sure to double check with any school you are thinking about attending. Even a small discount can help with the total you will be spending on your education.

Saving Money Isn’t the Only Consideration

Saving money on tuition isn’t the only consideration when choosing a school.  However, it is an important consideration when stretching your GI Bill benefits (or your own dollars) to advance your educational goals.
