Want to avoid out-of-pocket costs while using your GI Bill benefits and still attend the college of your choice? Find out if your school you hope to attend is a one of the Yellow Ribbon schools.
You may know that education expenses for tuition & fees may exceed the amount the Post 9/11 GI Bill will cover. Which means you could end up paying for things out of your own pocket. Thankfully there’s the Yellow Ribbon Program to help GI Bill users offset some or all of the expenses exceeding their military education benefits.

Yellow Ribbon School Program – What is it?
Colleges and universities participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program make additional funds available for veteran students. These funds help cover charges above the what is covered by the GI Bill.
The school can cover up to 50% of the tuition expenses that exceed the annual maximum cap. The VA then agrees to match the same amount that the school contributed. In some cases, this covers 100% of any additional cost, though that is not always the case.
Now all public universities offer in-state tuition for veterans. This was originally a part of the Yellow Ribbon program. As a result the main benefit of the program is reserved for those looking to attend a participating private school where the cost exceeds the GI Bill.
Are you eligible?
Only Veterans entitled to the maximum benefit rate, as determined by service requirements, or their designated transferees may receive this funding.
Active duty service members and their spouses are not eligible for this program.
