About Dr. Martens

German Klaus Märtens founded the company after injuring his foot while skiing and finding his army-issued boots too uncomfortable. While he was recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. The first factory was opened in 1952, in Munich. In 1959, a British shoe manufacturer, R. Griggs Group Ltd, acquired the patent rights to manufacture the shoes in the UK. Griggs then anglicized the name to Dr. Martens. In 1989, the Accent Group in New Zealand was the first to get the rights outside of the United Kingdom. Worldwide sales grew in the early 2010s. They offer a 15% student discount
