How to Sign Up for DoD SpouseWorks

Military spouses face multiple career challenges because of permanent change-of-station moves, deployments, and other factors. But the DoD offers help for those seeking portable careers, and military spouses may qualify for up to $4,000 in federal military tuition assistance through the former MyCAA option offered under the rebranded Department of Defense SpouseWorks program.

SpouseWorks is also the rebranded version of the program formerly known as the Military Spouse Employment Partnership or SECO. According to the official site:

“The DoD Office of Spouse Employment introduces SpouseWorks (formerly SECO), marking a new era of career and education support that helps military spouses grow skills, get career advice, and find jobs. While the name has changed, the commitment to helping military spouses build meaningful careers remains the same.”

According to the DoD, “SpouseWorks is designed to bring together the trusted career and education support military spouses have come to know through SECO into one clear, connected experience. By unifying career coaching, job opportunities, scholarships, fellowships, and educational resources in one place, SpouseWorks makes it easier to access support and navigate every stage of the career journey.”

How to Sign Up for DoD SpouseWorks

Applicants must apply, create an approved Education and Training Plan, and request financial assistance through SpouseWorks before classes begin.

The SpouseWorks Scholarship, formerly known as MyCAA, covers tuition for approved associate degrees, licenses, and occupational credentials. Funds go directly to participating schools, not to the learner.

Spouses of active-duty service members serving in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard qualify. Spouses of National Guard and reserve members serving on Title 10 orders qualify regardless of rank.

Enrollment requires an account through the Military OneSource network, which connects records to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS. The system automatically verifies marital status and military sponsor records, which is one reason it is so important to keep your DEERS information up to date.

After the system confirms eligibility, users complete registration on the SpouseWorks site, which includes reviewing a program fact sheet and answering orientation questions. The profile should include personal contact information, prior college courses, and work history.

What to Expect

Applicants complete a personality assessment as part of the process. It matches personality traits across seven career personality profiles and provides job recommendations suited to mobile military life.

Applicants will schedule a session with a SpouseWorks career coach. These professionals have master’s degrees in education, counseling, or human services and can be reached by phone at 800-342-9647. The coach evaluates career options, discusses local job markets, and helps you access the tools needed to upload documentation.

During the process, applicants select an institution using the SpouseWorks school search tool, and that institution must generate an official Education and Training Plan for the SpouseWorks learner. This plan details the target credential, school code, estimated completion date, and specific coursework with tuition rates.

Once advisers approve the training plan, spouses can plan for future semesters; the portal generates an official voucher for each approved course to deliver to the school billing office.

Funds cover tuition only. Funds do not cover books, laptops, lab supplies, childcare, or campus fees. Spouses must earn passing grades to stay eligible for SpouseWorks financial help; review the academic progress requirements before you commit.

What To Know About DoD SpouseWorks

  • SpouseWorks Scholarship funding caps out at $2,000 per fiscal year within the lifetime $4,000 award.
  • Account setup requires a myAuth credential, which connects via TRICARE Online and the SpouseWorks portal.
  • Before speaking with an education counselor, candidates complete the Traitify Personality Assessment. The tool sorts traits across seven work personalities and takes about 90 seconds.
  • Do not expect overnight approvals. Staff review Education and Training Plans in the order received, a process taking up to 14 business days.
  • Not every military spouse qualifies. Department of Defense rules exclude those legally separated from their sponsor.
