The following are the New Hampshire veterans’ benefits programs for education, employment, healthcare and housing.

Education Benefits for New Hampshire Veterans

In addition to federal programs such as the GI Bill, there are veterans’ benefits programs provided by the states.

Free Tuition for Surviving Children of Military Members

Children of military members who have died in service during wartime, and children of certain wartime veterans who die from a service-connected disability, may qualify for free tuition at New Hampshire colleges. They can also get a scholarship up to $2,500 per year for room/board/rent, books, and supplies up to $2,500 per year for a period of no more than 4 years. Children must be between 16 – 25.

New Hampshire National Guard: NHNG Scholarship

Scholarship awarded annually & paid directly to the school. Only applies to public and private schools in New Hampshire, not out-of-state institutions.

Housing Benefits for New Hampshire Veterans

Property Tax Credits/Exemptions

Veterans’ Tax Credit – Veterans can receive $50 ($51-$500 upon adoption by the municipality) subtracted from the taxes that are due on their residential property, as long as it is their primary residence. This is for every resident who has served not less than 90 days in the US Armed Forces in any qualifying wars or armed conflict and was honorably discharged. This will also be for the spouse or surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran.

Surviving Spouse Tax Credit- $700 ($701 up to $2,000 upon adoption by the municipality) is subtracted from taxes due on the applicants property, residential or other. The surviving spouse of any person who was killed or died while on active duty in the US Armed Forces, as long as they remain single, can also qualify.

Service-Connected Total Disability Tax Credit- $700 ($701 up to $2,000 upon adoption by the municipality) is subtracted from the property taxes due on the applicant’s residential property. This will be for any person who has been honorably discharged with a permanent service-connected disability, is a double amputee or paraplegic because of a service-connected injury, or is the surviving spouse of an above qualified veteran and remains single.

Property Tax Exemption-A disabled veteran may receive a full property tax exemption on their primary residence, if they are 100% disabled, blind, a paraplegic, or a double amputee as a result of their service and own a specially adapted home acquired with assistance from the VA.

Health Care Benefits for New Hampshire Veterans

The New Hampshire Veterans Home is located in Tilton and has a 250-bed facility for honorably discharged veterans who have served at least 90 days in the US military during a time of war. They will also need to be New Hampshire residents for at least one year before they apply.

Employment Benefits for New Hampshire Veterans

Veterans Guaranteed Reemployment

Any county, town, city, precinct, school board, or other political subdivision of the state shall re-employ a veteran of the military who has been placed on inactive status or been given anything other than a dishonorable discharge, within 90 days after being made inactive or discharged. Veterans shall also be able to be reinstated in their former jobs that they had before entering their military service and be able to receive at least the amount of pay they were making before they left.

Veterans Preference

If a veteran receives at least 70% on their final examination or structured interview for a position with the State of New Hampshire, they will be able to receive an additional 5 war veterans preference points, or if they have a service-connected disability, they will receive 10 points. An unmarried surviving spouse of a war veteran, or a spouse of a disabled war veteran with a service-connected total disability, will also receive 5 points. An unmarried spouse of a war veteran whose death was service-connected will receive 10 points.

Veterans’ Relief

In New Hampshire, if someone has served in the US military during any war, insurrection, campaign, or expedition in which the US was engaged, had a honorable discharge, and become poor and unable to provide for themselves or their dependent families, then they shall be supported at the public expense in the town or city that they live.

Global War on Terrorism Operations Service Bonus

New Hampshire offers a $100 bonus for every person who actively served in any capacity as a member of the uniformed services of the United States, on or after September 11, 2001.

They will have also needed to have earned the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal or Afghanistan Campaign or Iraq Campaign Medal, with an honorable discharge, or been MIA or killed in action.

They will need to have been resident of the state of New Hampshire at the time of entering active service. Keep in mind that the program did end on June 11, 2009, however it is mentioned here because there are provisions that allow for acceptance of applications after that date.
