Scholarships for Those Going Into Public Health
Public Health is an important career field to get into. You would be helping to prevent disease, looking for ways to prolong life and improve the quality of life for people. Here are a few scholarships for those going into Public Health or similar fields.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Multiple recipients, Up to $20,000
The Details: This program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health. The program offers scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, and paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation. The scholarship is to pay for tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses.
In order to qualify students need to be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited 4-year undergraduate university. They must also need to have an exceptional financial need based on income. Students can’t be a high school senior or have been awarded an undergraduate degree in the past. They also can’t be enrolled in an advanced degree program and must be able to fulfill the payback requirements.

SOPHE (Society for Public Health Education) Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship
3 recipients, $2,500
The Details: This scholarship is open to those who are SOPHE members who have excelled academically, demonstrate a commitment to addressing the public’s health through a career in health education, and who have demonstrated financial need.
Applicants also must have completed at least one-third of the coursework required for the major. In addition, they will have needed to have had their National SOPHE Membership for at least three months and will need to be an active participant in a National SOPHE sponsored committee, task force or another initiative for one year following the receipt of the scholarship. Lastly, they will need to be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student.
The Deadline: Applications are accepted between July and October.

Association of Accredited Public Health Programs
3 recipients, $500-1,000
The Details: This scholarship is for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a public health degree program in an AAPHP member or affiliated institution.
Applicants will need to have completed at least 15 graduate semester units or 22.5 quarter units and be in excellent academic standing. Also, they will need to be approved by their program to conduct a community-engaged project or thesis. Then they will need to be currently conducting or at least begin the planned project by a certain date.
One award of $500 will go to an undergraduate student, and two scholarships of $1,000 each will go to graduate students.

Betsy B. Woodward Scholarship
3 recipients, $2,500
The Details: This scholarship is for students in their 3rd year of college. Applicants will need to demonstrate a desire to serve in a career of research, regulatory work, quality control, or teaching. Also, the career must be in an area related to some aspect of foods, drugs, or consumer product safety. Lastly, candidates should have leadership capabilities.
This scholarship is from AFDO, the Association of Food and Drug Officials.

NEHA/AAS Scholarship
3 recipients, $2,650-$3,750
The Details: NEHA (National Environmental Health Association) and AAS (American Academy of Sanitarians) offer this scholarship to undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university with a dedicated and recognized curriculum in EH (environmental health) sciences. The award can be used for tuition and fees associated with the junior or senior year of college. For graduate students, it can be used for tuition and fees associated with graduate studies.
There will be two awards for undergraduates in the amount of $2,650. Also, there will be one award for a graduate student in the amount of $3,750.

TYLENOL Future Care Scholarship
Multiple recipients, $5,000-$10,000
The Details: The makers of TYLENOL award annual scholarships to well-deserving students that are pursuing careers in healthcare. They must be a graduate student or a college senior who will be enrolling in graduate school. They will be awarding 10, $10,000 scholarships and 25, $5,000 scholarships. The award can be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for the student’s course load.

HIMSS Foundation
2 recipients, $5,000
The Details: The HIMSS Foundation, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, offers two scholarships. One scholarship each to an undergraduate and one to a master’s level student. The award will be a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to the HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition.
Applicants will need to be enrolled in a program related to the healthcare information and technology field. Undergraduates will need to be at least a first-term junior. Finally, students need to be a current member in good standing by HIMSS.
